If you've ever searched for information online about the global state of data privacy practices, you know how difficult it is to get a comprehensive snapshot of what's going on around the world in our industry.
Since 2016 and the adoption of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), an increasing number of countries have deployed their own data privacy laws, or are working on it: USA, South Korea, South Africa, Brazil… keeping track and finding information can quickly become overwhelming.
At Didomi, we build technology to help companies put their users in control of their personal data, and aim to provide our customers with the best resources to understand the challenges and opportunities around privacy.
This is why we've built the Data Privacy Barometer, a single source of truth for anyone interested in data privacy and consent best practices.
Browsing the interactive sections of the barometer, you'll find:
- A look at the evolution of privacy and data regulations around the world over the past decade
- Information about specific countries and their data privacy laws status
- Exclusive insights on data collection practices by industry and purpose
- Performance of the various cookie consent notices you can implement with a Consent Management Platform (CMP)
And more. Check out the Data Privacy Barometer now, or keep on reading to learn more about it.
Summary
- Exploring data privacy regulations around the world
- Understanding tracking and data collection
- Designing consent banners with users in mind
Exploring data privacy regulations around the world
The first thing the Data Privacy Barometer provides is an interactive map, offering a snapshot of the evolution of privacy and data regulations around the world over the past decade.
This animated, visual timeline puts in perspective how widespread data privacy regulations have become over the last ten years. Hover over the various policy events on the map to see the regulatory status of each region and their local laws.
This is something you can explore further in the next section, where you can search for specific countries and learn more about their data privacy regulation history and current status.
This comprehensive data has been gathered by our team from publicly available sources and official legal texts, and will be regularly updated to keep up with the ever-changing global privacy landscape. The goal is to centralize information in the Data Privacy Barometer to give you a reliable go-to resource about new privacy regulations and updates.

But the barometer provides more than that.
Understanding tracking and data collection
The Data Privacy Barometer doesn’t center solely on regulations. In the second section of the page, focused on tracking, we’ve gathered exclusive insights about the various actors that collect tracking data across the web.
Known as vendors, these actors collect data either directly on websites or share it with each other, for a variety of purposes. Using data retrieved thanks to our Compliance Report, we’ve been able to build two advanced visualizations, bringing you insights about the way data is tracked across the web, and why.
First, focusing on vendors and industries.
The interactive visualization shows the average number of vendors per industry, before giving you a deeper look at the network of vendors involved. Additionally, you can observe what the actual vendor network of two anonymized websites look like.
The second part of the section focuses on purposes, answering the “why” behind consent collection with an overview of the main purposes declared by vendors, and a deeper dive into each industry and purpose specifically.
At Didomi, we help our customers be more transparent about how privacy is managed on their domains, and build a relationship based on trust with their own users. This section is especially interesting for anyone wondering who’s collecting data online, and why.
For example, you'll be able to observe that interestingly, Analytics & Tracking purposes make up for only 1% of the purposes declared by vendors across all industries, or that in the Gaming and Entertainment industry, 60% of vendors are collecting data for Advertising & Affiliation purposes.
To wrap it all up, the last part of the Data Privacy Barometer answers the “how”.
Designing consent banners with users in mind
As a Consent Management Platform (CMP), we’ve seen thousands of consent notices over the years, and have gathered key insights about which types of banners are a) most effective and b) most compliant.
The last section of the barometer addresses consent banner performance, showcasing the different types of consent notices businesses can implement and going over the positive consent rate for each, on average and by industry.
This is a critical resource if you’re looking to implement a new notice and are wondering whether to include a “Continue without agreeing” link for example, or if you’re questioning whether your notice is compliant in a specific country.
In the second part of the section, we provide data about cookie banner adoption rates around the world.
Countries with enforced data privacy laws have a higher adoption rate of course, but it’s easy to see, when comparing the adoption numbers with the interactive map at the top of the page, how much potential and demand there will be for a privacy-first approach to business in the upcoming years.
We’re excited for you to take a look at the Data Privacy Barometer and include it in your privacy stack! Give it a look now:
